2004年6月14日,波音公司获得了美国海军多任务海上飞机(MMA)系统研制和演示验证(SDD)阶段合同。MMA不仅是美国海军现役海上巡逻飞机(MPA)(包括P-3C、S-3、EP-3)的换代机型,其在战术使用方面也有所突破。新型海上飞机的任务将超越原来MPA的传统理念,在网络中心战的背景下,打造可在未来海战场上进行全方位态势支援的多任务平台体系。这种全新理念的飞机被美国海军称为“海神”。
On June 14, 2004, Boeing Co. won the contract for the development and demonstration verification (SDD) phase of the US Navy’s MMA multi-mission sea plane. Not only is the MMA a replacement for the US Navy’s active maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) (including the P-3C, S-3, EP-3), it also has a breakthrough in tactical use. The mission of the new seaplane will surpass the traditional concepts of the original MPA and create a multi-tasking platform system that can provide all-round situation support in future maritime battlefields under the background of network centric warfare. This new concept of aircraft by the US Navy called “Poseidon.”
