Hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) is a photodynamic material that can be selectively retained by tumor tissue. After a special laser activation, a photodynamic effect occurs to generate intracellular singlet oxygen, destroying tumor cells, but adjacent to normal tissues. The injury was slight; and hematoporphyrin derivative-photodynamic therapy (HPD-PDT) may act directly on the blood vessels, causing partial hypoxia and slowing the rate of tumor growth. This paper prospectively studies PDT as the main treatment outcome for patients with unresectable gastrointestinal cancers, in order to evaluate the safety and feasibility of this new therapy. Materials and Methods: 54 patients with biopsy-confirmed gastrointestinal cancer who had not been treated received endoscopic PDT. All cases were considered unsuitable for surgery. The maximum diameter of the lesion was <40 mm and there was no evidence of metastasis. Three groups
