严复(1854~1921年),原名宗光,字又陵,后改名复,字几道,福建侯官人。中国近代资产阶级启蒙思想家、翻译家、教育家。先入英国皇家海军学院学习,学成归国后任福建船政学堂教习,调任天津北洋水师学堂总教习,后升会办、总办。光绪二十四年(1898年)九月,撰《上光绪皇帝万言书》,极力倡导维新变法;同年,他翻译的第一部西方资产阶级学术名著《天演论》正式出版,宣扬“物竞天择”进步思想,是中国近代生存竞争思想的
