1666年由法兰西美术学院设立的罗马奖,是以美术专业学生为对象的最有权威性的历史画竞赛。这种竞赛在每年的春季举行,选拔分三个阶段进行:首先,参赛者按宗教、神话或历史故事的规定命题进行油画习作;然后是男裸体习作。最后剩下的前十名学生,再按规定命题在限定尺寸的画布上进行创作。获奖者可得到留学罗马五年的奖励,从而为将来成名奠定基础。选拔赛极端严格,一丝不苟,保持了罗马奖的近乎神圣的严肃性与权威性。参赛者们在被分隔的画室里进行竞赛,完成的作品,由工作人员打上红蜡封印,此后再由专家加以评定。
The Rome Prize, established by the French Academy of Fine Arts in 1666, is the most authoritative historical competition for art major students. This competition is held in the spring of each year. The selection is divided into three stages: first, the participants make oil painting based on the propositions of religion, mythology, or historical story; then the male nudes. The last remaining 10 students, according to the provisions of the proposition in the limited size canvas creation. The winners will receive five years of study in Rome reward, so as to lay the foundation for future fame. The trials were extremely rigorous and meticulous, maintaining the almost sacred solemnity and authority of the Roman Prize. Contestants were competing in the separated studio and the finished work was marked with a red wax seal by the staff and then later assessed by experts.
