The issue of whether older pregnant women have increased adverse outcomes of pregnancy is gaining attention, as the proportion of older primipara continues to increase. Between 1970 and 1986, the proportion of primipara in the United States between the ages of 30 and 39 more than doubled, while the proportion of primiparous women aged 40-44 increased by 50%. A recent survey of women who want to have children in the United States shows that the above trend may persist.
