St. Petersburg: US medical scientists report “the first direct evidence” of excessive salt-induced hypertension. Dr. Mordocai Blaustein, head of physiology at the University of Maryland’s Medical School, says the key issue with salt-induced hypertension is the secretion of a hormone called sodium. Speaking at a symposium held by the American Heart Association at a local conference, he said that he had experimented with a biochemical analysis that has been shown to be present in the blood of hypertensive patients. He linked this hormone to the body’s ability to rule out excess sodium and the systolic blood pressure that causes high blood pressure. He said: “Our laboratory and several other laboratories around the world are doing their utmost to purify this sodium-binding hormone and try to understand its characteristics.”
