当年,在古城奉天(沈阳)提起张作霖的大南门帅府,可谓无人不知、无人不晓。可是如今在沈阳市内,特意去寻找这座晚清民国时代的建筑旧址,却是要颇费一番周折才行。昔日气势恢宏的大帅府,现在已被林立的巨厦楼群所团团包围,变成了沈阳市中心的一座不太显眼的旧式宅院。但是,大帅府——这座始建于晚清的奉天督军私邸,虽然没有想象中的气魄,但它作为那个时代保留下来的历史遗迹,还不失为一座古朴典雅、风格独特的建筑群。站在这座奉系军阀、关东枭雄张作霖的大帅府前,自然决不仅仅是观瞻这一排排当今看来并不先进的屋宇,而是想通过这座晚清民国的建筑,窥探奉系军阀的浮沉与兴衰。从巡抚官邸到大帅府大帅府坐南朝北。清太祖努尔哈赤及其继承人清太宗皇太极营造的皇宫,在大南门“井”字形大街的中心,而大帅府的位置恰好就在这条“井”字大街南端的500米处。现在保存下来的张氏大帅府,是座古色古香的三进四合院。这座院宅如今统称为大帅府的“老宅”。
