1979年春,在黔阳地区引种四川省的米德杉木(Cunninghania Cancelata Hook)进行育苗试验.试验地,海拔高350米,年平均气温16.4℃,极端最高气温39.6℃,极端最低温度—10.7℃.年平均相对湿度为78—84%,降雨量1427.6毫米,蒸发量1342.8毫米.无霜期平均在286天以上.年平均日照时数1479.2时.苗圃地原为水田,土壤母质主要是第三纪红砂岩,多为坡积物,肥力较差.播种米德杉苗圃地整地一次,未施底肥.播种湖南省靖具排牙山林场种子园无性系的11个优株的苗圃,进行三挖三烧,施底肥.和播种本省杉木作对照.
