Mark A Atkinson of the University of Florida is an outstanding scholar in the field of diabetes research and has published over 300 articles. Dr. Atkinson began his research into Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 29 and won several awards through his efforts. He has also been active in leadership positions in Type 1 diabetes groups, including the JDRF, ADA, NIH, IDS, and others. He is the founder of the NIH Immunological Tolerance Network Science Advisory Board, a member of the National Institutes of Health Sciences Beta-Cell Biology External Science Advisory Committee and Clinical Trial Network, and is also an Executive Network for Diabetic Pancreas Organ Donation (nPOD) director. Dr. Atkinson is an internationally recognized authority on type 1 diabetes, especially in the field of disease prediction and prevention, the role of environmental factors in onset, stem cell and pancreatic regeneration, pancreatic pathology, prevention or reversal of disease and the identification of tolerance and Immune regulatory markers and so on.
