In recent years, the gold output in Australia has been steadily increasing. In 1983, the gold output increased from 17 tons in 1980 to 32.2 tons. At present, the country’s gold output accounts for about 3% of the western world. With the completion and commissioning of many new gold mines, it is planned to raise the national gold output to more than 60 tons from 1987 to 1988. Australian gold mines, like South Africa, have experienced a sharp decline in the number of gold miners as a result of the drop in the dollar price of gold as a result of the currency exchange rate change. At the beginning of 1984, the Australian dollar was worth 90 cents; as of March 1985, the Australian dollar was equivalent to 68 cents and the gold price was 425 Australian cents per ounce.
