江苏境内江河沟渠纵横交错,湖泊池塘星罗棋布,气候温和,雨量充沛,饵料生物丰盛,有利于虾类栖息繁衍,有着丰富的淡水虾类资源。淡水虾类在江苏省淡水渔业中占有相当地位,是江苏省的重要水产资源。太湖的白虾,阳澄湖的青虾,白马湖的糠虾蜚名省内外。太湖虾产量历年平均在50～75万公斤左右,约占全太湖渔业产量的5～10%;洪泽湖虾类的年产量在75～100万公斤,占全湖水产品产量的15%,最高可达150万公斤。
