  A
Deena and Sarah spent their summer vacation with Deena’s uncle Samoa, who was a retired teacher, living in a faraway house in the middle of a huge forest. Every day they walked with him in the forest, listening to his strange stories about trees, witches, and fortune-tellers. There was no end to his stories—he could go on and on—so one day Deena asked him, “Where have you read all these stories?”
“I haven’t read them. They just get into my mind when I see things.”
  “How come?”

“You see, when I see an old oak tree, I try to imagine the experience this tree has. All the people who have passed this tree during the years—lovers—walkers—workers—all kinds of people. And I imagine the tree telling me all this-and there you go—the story is there!”
“So you mean that the tree has stories,” Deena said, thinking closely.
“No, but the presence of the tree makes my mind come up with imagination. When I am alone, I just see sights, but when I’m walking with you, the sights come to words, and I tell you the story. Do you see?”
“No,” Deena said. “I think things are there—events are there—thoughts are there—and people’s minds make connections between them. For animals there are only things and events, and they do not connect them the way we do. They are not supposed to. But people have minds, and the meaning of the human mind is to learn to connect events and things with their thoughts.”
Uncle Samoa listened attentively. Then he said, “What you say is—well, mental creation, or something like that. Does this mean, that you mean, that our goal is to create? That it is more important to create than to think?”
“That’s it,” Deena said. “Life is creation. Creation is there all the time, waiting for us to see.”
“Look,” Uncle Samoa said. “Look at that wonderful tree. See a story there?”
“Yes,” Sarah laughed. “It’s a story about love—Man’s love for Nature, and Nature’s love for us.”
“Or a ballet—look at the leaves,” Deena said eagerly. “They move in the wind like a ballet.”
“I can almost hear the symphony(交响乐),” Uncle Samoa said. “The forest-symphony, telling us to take care of Nature—dance with it—pick up all stories—make a painting of this wonderful world. I do agree with you—there is nothing but creation. So let’s join our hands and dance to my house. I expect a whole orchestra (管弦乐队)waiting for us there.”
“This is just beautiful,” Deena said. “Three people dancing in the forest, while the leaves make their ballet above our heads. I think I’m going to fold out my wings and fly home.”
“Sure, why not! Everything is possible, when the mind is ready and open.”
And there Uncle Samoa stood, looking at the two flying girls. “What a story,” he said. “What a story!!”

Charles Dickens was a well known personality and his novels were hugely popular during his lifetime. His first full novel The Pickwick Papers brought him immediate fame and this fame continued right through his career. He maintained a high quality in all his writings and although never departing greatly from his typical “Dickensian” style he did experiment with different themes, moods and styles. Some of these experiments were more successful than others and the public’s taste and appreciation of his various works have varied over time. He was usually keen to give his readers what they wanted and the monthly or weekly publication of his works in episodes meant that the books could change as the story went on at the interest of the public. A good example of this is the American episodes in Martin Chuzzlewit which were put in by Dickens in response to lower than normal sales of the earlier chapters. In Our Mutual Friend the inclusion of the character of Riah was a positive description of a Jewish character after he was criticized for the character of Fagin(教唆儿童少年犯罪者)in Oliver Twist.

His popularity has waned little since his death and he is still one of the best known and most read of English authors. At least 180 movies and TV adaptations based on Dickens’ works help confirm his success. Many of his works were adapted for the stage during his own lifetime and as early as 1913 a silent film of The Pickwick Papers was made. His characters were often so memorable that they took on a life of their own outside his books. Gamp became a slang expression for an umbrella from the character Mrs. Gamp and Pickwickian, Pecksniffian and Gradgrind all entered the dictionary owing to Dickens’ perfect description of these kinds of people. Sam Weller was an early superstar perhaps better known than his author at first. It is likely that A Christmas Carol is his best-known story, with new adaptations almost every year. It is also the most-filmed of Dickens’ stories, most versions dating from the early years of cinema. This simple morality tale with humor and pathos(感伤), for many, sums up the true meaning of Christmas and eclipses(超越)all his other Christmas stories.
  40. Charles Dickens managed to keep his books in good quality because__________.
  A. he kept enjoying this good fame through his writing career
  B. he could keep changing his books by doing experiments as his story went on

Like most areas of marketing, advertising is changing rapidly. Some think that change has affected advertising more than any other marketing function. One of the most important trends in advertising is digital convergence(趋同).
While many different media outlets(通道) are available for communicating with customers, the ability to tell differences between outlets is becoming more difficult due to the convergence of different media types. Advertising convergence, and more appropriately digital convergence, refers to a growing trend for using computer technology to deliver media programming and information. Convergence allows one media outlet to take advantage of features and benefits offered through other media outlets. For instance, in many areas around the world television programming is now delivered digitally via cable, telephone or satellite connection. This delivery method uses the same principles of information delivery that is used to allow someone to connect the Internet.

The convergence of television and Internet opens many potential opportunities for marketers to target customers in ways not available with traditional television advertising. For example, technology may allow ads delivered to one household (family) to be different from ads delivered to a neighbor’s television even though both households are watching the same program. But convergence is not limited to just television. Many media outlets are experiencing convergence as can be seen with print publications that now have a strong web presence. The future holds even more convergence opportunities. These include outdoor billboards that change displays as cars containing geographic positioning systems (GPS) and other recognizable factors (e.g., GPS tied to satellite radio) pass by or direct mail postcards that carry a different message based on data that matches a household’s address with television viewing habits.
  48. It is more difficult now to tell this media outlet from that one__________ .
  A. because rapid change has affected advertising
  B. because the important trend in advertising is growing
  C. because of the poor ability of telling differences
  D. because of the convergence of different media types
  49. All of the following statements are true except that__________.
  A. different newspapers, magazines or books can be read on the Internet
  B. different families can see different ads while watching the same TV program
  C. different television viewers can receive the same postcard with a different message 
  D. different drivers in different cars can see different displays at the same outdoor billboard
  50. This passage mainly talks about__________ .
  A. a new development in television
  B. a new digital technology 
  C. a new trend of advertising
  D. a new way of advertising

Some common tips can help you in preventing air journey problems. These tips are very common but you can travel happily if you follow them.
  •Go to a journey with a minimum(最小的)sized bag.
•You can bring your own food for journey to make sure that you get what you want to eat.
  •Bring at least a magazine or a book to avoid boredom(解闷). 
•You can eat at the airport before you take off so as to make sure that you do not feel hungry during the journey. The basic idea is that you should not feel hungry or get bored during the journey as it might spoil(破坏)your mood.
•When boarding the plane, do notice the place of exit. Also, count the number of rows you have to pass from the exit. Doing this can help you to have a better idea of escaping from the plane in case of any emergency(紧急情况).
•Read the manual or instructions provided by the staff(员工). A plan for a safer journey will make you feel cool and relaxed at the time of traveling.
•If you buy tickets online, call airline, and ask them to assign(分配)you a seat right away. If you come at the last moment, just before your plane takes off, you might not get a desired seat. Sometimes, planes are overbooked, and if you are not assigned a seat, you might be forced to fly by another flight.
•Make sure you keep before you take off. Avoid checking your bag again and again. Keep your money safe.

The best way to avoid problem is to make a note of everything you have in your bag. In this way, you can never forget anything important.
