The U.S. Army and Hughes started ground trials of the Lightweight Atmospheric Exterior Projectile (LEAP) prototype. LEAP is one of the ground-equipped strategic missile defense systems that impacts and re-enters the body (nuclear warhead) outside the atmosphere. Air Force / Boeing LEAP also test one month later. Army / Hughes Test Group conducted at Edwards Air Force Base. The prototype weighed 5 kg and was tested in a restrained state to simulate the actual flight state in 10 seconds.
