本期的封面是一幅日本的木刻画《藤原俊臣的女儿》。作者不详。藤原俊臣(1114—1204)是日本平安时代的一位著名歌人,六十三岁时出家为僧,法名释阿。出家前,俊臣曾在歌坛名噪一时,著作颇丰,重要的代表作品有《长秋咏藻》(1178)等。画面上的这个妇女是俊臣的养女。据说,她也是一位出色的歌人。丈夫死后,她也遁入空门。这幅木刻是日本浮世绘风格的作品。画面上描绘了一个日本妇女正在出游,表现了人民日常生活的场面。浮世绘的画家在勾画人物时,人物的面部往往是类型化的,这和西洋画不同,并不是真实地画出人物的五官面貌。从这幅作品可以看到,画家
