One reason men have low immunity is probably that they have only one X chromosome, while women have two. Recent studies have shown that the X chromosome carries a number of genes that control immunity. Because women have a pair of X chromosomes, they have more spares. If one of the problems occurs, the other can replace it. Pettiro is among the several immunodeficiencies predisposed to males due to a lack of such spare chromosomes
