Dudley Nichols is probably the most famous of all Hollywood screenwriters, mainly because of his work with American director John Ford. Among the scripts he wrote are “Informer” (1935), “Guanshanfeidu” (1939), “The Return of Far East” (1940) and so on. In this article, he clearly put forward the importance of the screenwriter. However, he emphasizes the inherent collaborative nature of filmmaking. In his opinion, although the screenwriter plays a dominant role, it is the director who dominates. Nichols talked about his comments on the screenwriter, said a few noteworthy on the nature of the movie aphorism. He clearly believes that the film is not so much a performance of art as performance of “the art of reaction.”
