The U.S. Armed Forces, Air, Land and Air Corps and the Defense Research and Probation Bureau are conducting formal assessments to sum up the experience gained in the use of military satellites in the Desert Storm Action Plan. The Air Force and the CIA’s 6-7 satellites, including the Hockey-1 Radar Satellite, provided many intelligence images for this Gulf operation. The clarity of satellite imagery is high, but much of the information is stuck in information processing units like the National Air Force and CIA’s National Photonics Processing Center (NPIC). Due to the limited capacity of communication satellite image relay, the data transmission rate to the battlefield is also very slow.
