Objective To observe the dynamic changes of free iron after experimental spinal cord injury and its significance. Methods SD rats were randomly divided into four groups. The spinal cord was injured by the measure of Allen’s method (50g · cm). Splenic enzyme method was used to determine the concentration of free iron in the spinal cord at different time points after spinal cord injury, and the changes of MDA at the corresponding time points were also measured. Results After 30min of spinal cord injury, the concentration of free iron was significantly increased compared with the control group and the normal group (P <0.05), and then gradually decreased; the level returned to normal after 6h. MDA was also significantly increased at 30 min after injury, compared with the control group and normal control group, the difference was significant (P <0. 05); 3h after injury the highest, 12h returned to normal. Conclusions After the spinal cord injury, the concentration of free iron increased rapidly, triggering lipid peroxidation.
