Often, during plant breeding programs and germplasm preservation, a method of identifying different varieties is required, which is especially important later in the breeding season, as it is then necessary to demonstrate whether future new varieties will differ from the existing ones. In the past, the identification of barley cultivars in our laboratory was mainly based on the botanical analysis of the seed and plant traits. However, the use of protein and isoenzyme electrophoresis to separate and identify cultivars has led to the development of the polymorphism of the main storage proteins in barley. Genetic Identification of Varieties and Gliadin Loci. Although there is indeed a variation in storage proteins, the identification of specific barley varieties by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) has been less successful, perhaps because many barley varieties in Europe are derived from less
