利用柱面光栅显示立体图象的原理,可以组成单屏幕的立体显示器。为了使所显示的图象能与显示光栅相配合,就应使左、右两幅图象的每一对象素分别位于每一栅栏面的左、右两个出射焦点上,我们称这一条件为匹配条件;满足匹配条件的显示器称为匹配显示器。显然,单屏幕的立体电视显示器必须是匹配显示器,而按结构和工作原理的不同,又可将其分为点同步扫描方式(可采用固体显示单元)和电子束扫描方式(采用电子束管)两大类。前者可与来自双镜头单靶面固体摄象器件作点同步的立体电视信号相配合使用,称为S_a 型立体显示器;而后者则可与采用双摄象靶面并列摄取的立体电视信号相配合,称为 S_b 型立体显示器。
