古代有个传说:公元前500多年的春秋之时,师旷用瑟为晋平公演奏了一曲高深的《清角》(《白雪》),神灵从天而降,“一奏之有云从西北起,再奏之暴雨及至,大雨沣沛,裂帷幕,破俎豆,堕廊瓦,坐者散走。平公恐惧,伏于室侧,身遂疾痛,晋国大旱,赤地三年。”这在古籍《韩非子·十过》、《淮南鸿烈·览冥训》和《风俗通义》中都有记载。古人亦知音乐无此巨大力量,《论衡·感虚篇》中曾有“殆虚言也。……实者乐声不能致此”之说。瑟是我国最早的弹弦乐器之一,《诗经.小雅》有:“……我田既臧,农夫之庆。琴瑟击鼓,以御田祖,以祈甘雨,以介我稷黍,以谷我士女。”这是见于古籍
