The Republic of Iceland is a large island nation on the North Atlantic in the northwestern Europe with an area of 102,846 square kilometers. East across the Norwegian Sea with Norway, 820 kilometers south of the United Kingdom, north-west across the Danish Strait and the world’s largest island across Greenland. Due to close to the Arctic Circle, a considerable area covered by the glaciers named. The coastline is 2,000 kilometers long. The continental shelf covers an area of 111,000 square kilometers and the economic area of 200 nautical miles covers an area of 867,100 square kilometers. In 1975 a population of 220,000.
