In the Japanese market, instrumentation controllers that use fuzzy logic inference and new types of sensors have had a huge impact on manufacturers, suppliers and users. Companies in other countries should consider creating the ability to adapt to a sudden shift in market direction (ie embedding these technologies in meters). To make this shift of focus a happy move, a strategic plan must be developed that addresses three issues: First, instrument manufacturers must target or develop instruments that have embedded “smart” capabilities. Second, the sensor manufacturer must prepare for the development of sensors suitable for fuzzy logic control. Third, traditional controller theorists must thoroughly understand the theory of fuzzy logic inference control and understand when and how the theory can best be used.
