The 1st National Symposium on Computational Geomechanics sponsored by the Computational Mechanics Committee of the Chinese Society of Mechanical Science was held on November 23rd to 27th, 1987 in Sichuan Southwestern Jiaotong University. The conference attracted the attention of the domestic mechanics and geotechnical engineering circles. A total of 113 representatives from over 60 units attended the conference. The conference has published more than 100 monographs in various forms through conferences and group exchanges. In recent years, with the wide application of electronic computers, numerical methods, especially the finite element method and the boundary element method, have become effective means for solving complex rock mechanics and engineering mechanics problems, and have received great attention from engineers and technicians. The practical application of numerical analysis in geotechnical engineering has also promoted the development of computational mechanics and combined computational mechanics with geotechnical engineering mechanics.
