Statistical and spatial analysis of historical time series and remote sensing data suggest that there is a link between the spatial distribution and growth of gold production in the Guyana shield north-east of Amazonas. The results show an exponential increase in output in an expanding area, mainly due to the lagged response to the floating of the international gold market from 1971 to 1978. Subsequently, the average virtual price (real value) increased 10-fold (2-fold), creating an attractive economic stimulus that led to the massive exploitation of low-grade gold mines. The ground distribution and remote sensing distribution of mining behaviors are closely related to those deposits that are predominant in the gold geology of the area. The presence of these gold-bearing formations in protected areas and sustainable timber-producing areas has triggered social conflicts in the region, leading to environmental degradation. More than 250 000 km2 are designated as protected areas and tropical forest areas under sustainable management are unmanaged. Due to the lack of comprehensive resource utilization planning, no recovery work is carried out, and control of illegal operations is lost. Price-driven gold mining Industry prosperity will eventually put these areas in jeopardy. The unregulated mining environment is full of serious public health problems, further offsetting the financial gains from gold mining. This research, in part, shows how international economic policies that have succeeded in stabilizing the more famous global economic center have caused unintended but profound environmental and social impacts on new and remote areas of commodities.
