Are you a foreigner puzzled by oft-heard expressions like “socialism with Chinese characteristics” and “comprehensively deepening reform?”Then help is at hand with a program launched in December to enable foreigners understand political and cultural phrases.
The China Keywords program is co-produced by the China International Publishing Group(CIPG), China Academy of Translation, Translators Association of China and the International Communication Research Center at CIPG. First published on China.org.cn, it is a multi-language, multimedia platform offering interpretation of expressions frequently used in government documents to describe developmental theories and pathways, external and internal policies as well as the cultures and philosophies of contemporary China.
Aimed at government officials, think tanks, media and research institution all over the world, it is also a reference tool for translators, Chinese publicity bureaus, foreign affairs offices, embassies and consulates.
The first phase of the program, available in Chinese, English, French, Russian, Arabic, Spanish and Japanese, has five sections: the Chinese Dream, Comprehensively Deepening Reform, Political Development, On Socialism with Chinese Characteristics, and On the International Situation and Diplomatic Strategies.
The “keywords” are highlights from the report to the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), the decisions taken at the Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee, the government work report tabled at the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in 2014, speeches by President Xi Jinping, and important documents written by the new leaders of the CPC Central Committee. The later phases of the program will provide updates on more recent documents in more languages.
While a number of experts from the central authorities compiled the Chinese terms, a committee of veteran translators and a group of foreign editors translated the terms and expounded them.
Zhou Mingwei, President of CIPG, said with China’s international influence growing and the world paying more attention to her, it was of great importance to accurately explain contemporary China to the world. The platform is a very good initiative for that, Zhou added.
Wang Gangyi, Vice President of CIPG, said a large number of domestic and foreign experts and scholars as well as professional translators are participating in the project, ensuring the authenticity and accuracy of its contents.
The contents will be available in multimedia formats including apps, on social media and instant messaging platforms.
China Keywords is an interactive platform where readers can send their comments, interpretations and suggestions for its improvement.
