周世宁,1934年1月生于江苏省扬州市,1950年从省立扬州中学毕业,进入中国矿业学院采矿工程系学习,l953年毕业留校,从事矿山通风与安全专业的教学和科研工作。l959年,他研制的矿井通风网路电模拟计算机被高教部选送到德国莱比锡国际博览会展览,1979年在第18届国际采矿安全大会上任大会执行副主席,1998年在日本东京亚洲和太平洋国际采矿大会上任执行主席。周世宁院士是我国矿井瓦斯学科的主要奠基人。40年来,他潜心于煤矿安全,特别是矿井瓦斯防治工程的研究工作,取得了一系列具有创造性的科学成果。他首次提出的煤矿瓦斯地质的8项基本因素,已广泛应用于煤田瓦斯预测;他创建的“煤层瓦斯流动理论”体系,形成了瓦斯防治工程的理论核心;他在世界上首次提出“煤层瓦斯应力场”的概念,将瓦斯流动理论的研究推进到一个固、气耦合的新阶段;他与何学秋教授提出的“流变假说”为瓦斯防治工作开辟了新途径;他创造的“用固体封压力液体,压力液体封瓦斯的主动式密封系统”,解决了世界性的测量瓦斯压力不准的难题;他与林柏泉教授发明的三相泡沫密封技术,在世界上首次解决了在煤层大裂隙带中封孔测压的难题……1975年,他设计制作了胶圈—压力粘液瓦斯压力测定仪。1978年,他撰写的《煤层透气系数测定和计算方法》被原煤炭?
