吴自强先生,字健行,号勉斋,晚年自称童翁。1901年12月26日出生在江西省临川县一个贫苦农民家庭。12岁方入私塾,但天资聪颖、深得塾师喜爱。后入小学半工半读。17岁时以第一名的成绩从小学毕业,旋即考入省立第三师范。校长张一清先生是近代有名的教育家,见吴先生家贫苦读,多予鼓励,并免其学膳各费。毕业后,留校任农村师范科主任兼教员。1926年1月,张校长得知江西旅日官堂即将恢复,遂动员吴先生赴东京补习日语及应考
