Shows seismic activity in Italy and surrounding areas over the past 20 years. The source location was obtained from the P-wave and S-wave of the National Geophysical and Volcano Research Institute (INGV) National Seismograph Network and several regional fixed seismograph networks. More than 48,000 events were selected from the raw data of approximately 99,780 events to reconstruct the most complete seismic activity image in Italy to date. Through the distribution of the seismic activity images, the seismic structures of the most complicated regions of subduction and land-continent collisions are deduced. Our results clearly reveal the subduction geometry of the Adria and Ionian plates and the continuous normal faults in the upper crust along the Apennines. The depth of the seismogenic layer is calculated from the cut-off depth of the seismic activity and varies greatly along and across the active area. The earthquake was caused by the difference in the rate of plate withdrawal and the upwelling of subsequent asthenospheric material.
