硼对棉花的生长发育有很大影响。棉花缺硼表现叶片卷曲皱缩,顶端生长点受阻,簇生顶端生长点增多。花、蕾铃发育不正常,茎和叶柄维管束受损,间断褐色的坏死组织或暗绿色、褐色环带,重者出现蕾而不花现象。棉花施硼后,可明显提高产量,改善品质,提高抗病能力。平均增产8.1%,亩增产皮棉6.5公斤,多增加收入22.90元(按每公斤单价3.52元计)。施硼比不施硼的棉株高度增加1.27厘米,单株果枝数和伏前桃增加0.2个,单株铃数增加0.07个,铃重增加0.22克,落铃率降低1%,纤维长度增加0.19毫米,衣分率提高0.5%。
