1958年以来新疆哈密瓜由于花叶病毒的发生,使产量和含糖量严重降低。由病株分离出三种病毒,称谓哈密瓜病毒2、3和5。简称HMV2、HMV3和HMV5。HMV2:病毒颗粒为多面体,直径32毫微米,沉降系数(S_(20w))为90。寄主范围广,包括许多种植物,桃蚜(Myzus persicae)可以传病,与黄瓜花叶病毒抗血清有正反应,HMV2是黄瓜花叶病毒的一个株系。HMV3:病毒颗粒为多面体,直径28毫微米,超离心时沉降成三个成分,其沉降系数分别为51,85和104。寄主范围局限于葫芦科植物,蚜虫不传病。与南瓜花叶病毒抗血清有正反应,HMV3是南瓜花叶病毒的一个株系。HMV5:病毒颗粒为线状;大小为710×15毫微米,沉降系数为134,汁液和蚜虫传毒,除葫芦科植物外,还侵染苋色藜、豌豆和蚕豆。HMV5是西瓜花叶病毒的一个株系。

HMV5: virus particles linear; size of 710 × 15 nm, sedimentation coefficient of 134, juice and aphids poisoning, in addition to Cucurbitaceae, also infected with amaranth, peas and beans. HMV5 is a strain of watermelon mosaic virus.
