Meiluo is located in Meigugang, a historical and cultural city in Zhaoqing City. Legend has it that the six ancestors of the Buddhist Zen in the Tang Dynasty, Hui Neng, passed through here and used Mei as a sign. The Five Dynasties were established here and named “Mei Lu” to commemorate the Sixth Patriarch Huineng. The main existing buildings in Meiluo are Shanmen, Daxiongbao Temple and Liuzu Hall, which are located on a central axis. The half-arched beams of the main hall preserve the characteristics of the wood structure of the Northern Song Dynasty. The temple was built in the second year of the Northern Song Dynasty (996 AD) and is the earliest existing wooden structure in Lingnan. In the existing wood architecture south of the Yangtze River, it ranks second, second only to the Hualin Temple Hall in Fuzhou (built in the second year of Gande, namely in 946 AD).
