传统观点认为,《海的女儿》通过对人类的高度赞美表达出明显的人文精神,但若从女性主义角度出发进行解读,会发现这篇童话表现了西方女性复杂而微妙的失语处境:一方面对男性权威心存质疑,努力寻求自我表现的途径;另一方面又不由自主地受到传统习俗的制约,在男权文化面前放弃个性的表达。《海的女儿》以女性个人价值与尊严的牺牲完成父权传统对“人”的赞美,实际上已经违背了西方人文传统的精神内核,从这个意义上看,《海的女儿》又可以说是反人文主义的。
