Botulinum toxin type A (BTA) is a new and promising alternative to chronic upper extremity spasticity after stroke. Studies have shown that local injection of BTA can reduce muscle tone, increase joint mobility, reduce pain and promote hand recovery. Initial clinical studies have shown that the addition of electrical stimulation to the injected muscle enhances the role of BTA in the treatment of lower extremity spasticity in adults. The authors further elucidated the efficacy of BTA alone and in combination with electrical stimulation in the treatment of chronic upper extremity spasticity and conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
