铜墨盒产生在清晚期,在铜墨盒上刻字首创者为陈寅生。周继烈老师对陈寅生已详细考证:陈麟炳,北京人,生于1830年(庚寅年),卒于1908年后。寅生1862年开店,店址琉璃厂,店名万丰斋,刻铜墨盒以寅生款存世。寅生刻字在当时就为世人所重,经过一百多年的风尘变故,寅生刻铜真迹就更显珍贵。民国期间就有仿寅生款的墨盒,时至今日,仍有仿寅生款的墨盒屡屡面世,这也足以证明寅生刻铜在人们心中
