Italy is a country with a sharp contrast: it is both an advanced and developed country and an underdeveloped country. It is both a western European country that participates in the common market integration and is also a Mediterranean country. Its apparent prosperity impresses the vast majority of visitors, at least in the northern and central regions. Sales of new cars in other European countries dropped sharply in 1981, but rose 3.7% in Italy. Italy also ranks first in European countries in terms of the number of people who have the second place to stay (vacation).
