从2009年8月上任到2011年4月离任,一年零八个月的时间将使洪博培成为任期最短的美国驻华大使之一。如果真如外界所传言,洪博培将挑战奥巴马,竞选总统一职,那么,他将成为美国历史上第一位会说流利汉语的总统竞选人。1月底,中国国家主席胡锦涛对美国进行了首次国事访问。美国驻华大使洪博培作为访问事宜美国方面的主要负责人之一,也迎来了他上任以来职业生涯的一个高潮。可是在胡锦涛主席访问结束之后,洪博培却一直没有返回北京。他留在了去年在华盛顿新购置的家中,并在中国的春节之前向美国总统奥巴马写了一封辞职信。在事业风声水起之时突然辞职,自然引发了媒体的巨大兴趣。舆论普遍认为这证明洪博培已经决定竞选2012年美国总统,并提早回国开始为此做准
From August 2009 to take office in April 2011, leaving one year and eight months will make Huntsman the short term one of the U.S. ambassadors to China. If, as the outside world rumored, Huntsman will challenge Obama and run for president, he will become the first presidential candidate in the history of the United States to speak Fluent Chinese. At the end of January, Chinese President Hu Jintao made his first state visit to the United States. It is generally believed that this proves that Huntsman has decided to run for the presidential election in 2012 and that early return to China will begin to do so
