The “I love NY” T-shirt logo was invented in 1976 by the 1)graphic artist Milton Glaser, to promote the image of the Big Apple. Since then, it has become nothing less than a symbol of the United States. With its big red heart and long black letters, this T-shirt has often acted as New York City’s ambassador.
This simple, 2)punchy logo has become one of the most popular and copied in the history of the T-shirt. Souvenir vendors the world over have adapted it to all the world’s capital cities. From “I love Paris” to “I love Sydney”, the famous heart now knows no boundaries.
After the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001, New Yorkers rediscovered their symbolic T-shirt, and flocked to tourist vendors to buy it. Like a banner of heroism and hope, it has been fluttering for several months in the city streets, alongside its big brother, the Stars and Stripes.
