北京旧时火灾较多,人们对于火灾发生的原因和预防的科学,缺乏常识,常常把希望寄托在火神身上。火神并非天神,而是我国历史上一位优秀的治理火事的官员,此人官职是火政,名字叫祝融。最早的火神庙,叫火神祠,主祭的人就是祝融火政,也有供奉王灵官的,王灵官也是火神。祭祀火神,是古人的一种善良的宗教信仰。借祭火神之机,宣扬慎火之传统,有益于民生,也是古人的一种精神寄托。
