画,本来的意义,是视觉中显现的可视形象。诗中之画,则是诗歌语言中所蕴含的非可视形象,依语言本身所具有的形象意义,在人通过联想与想象之后,精神中可以呈现出历历在目的景物。王维的诗歌,其于画境的体现,已达到了一个活脱自然的境地。作为一个山水画家,对于自然山川的体会,王维已经透入到了最底一层。景物的形色在他的眼里,已经隐而不见,所呈现出的,只是自然的一种精髓,一种本真的面目,一种原来的自然的状态。新唐书中传说:王维“画思入神。至山水平远、云势石色,绘工以为天机所到,学者不及也。”这“天机”正是王维从事艺术创造的动力与灵感的源泉。“机”,是一种机智、机巧、切合,“天机”则更是人与自然冥合无间的状态。
