The United States Navy’s Integrated Air Defense Fire Control System was used to link airborne sensor systems with U.S. naval vessels to form a single network. The first aircraft carrier strike group equipped with the system, after having performed its first overseas deployment mission, return. Modern naval ships have to overcome the limitations imposed by the curvature of the Earth’s surface on their defenses, allowing them to detect and combat incoming threats beyond the radar and other sensor systems of ships. At the same time, its “anti-access / area denial” (A2 / AD) capabilities pose a growing challenge to the U.S. Navy as potential opponent’s long-range attack capability and air defense system enhancements have necessitated increased weapon delivery distance.
