An A330 of Airbus Industries crashed on Palau Nac airport near Toulouse, France, on June 30 and all seven were killed, including pilot test pilot Nick Warner. The A330 test machine crashed into a test that made the autopilot perform three types of automatic landing and go-around tests in the event of an engine failure. The A330 loses lateral lateral control at about 400 meters and landed at the airport near the border. The A33O fitted two PW4168 turbofan engines from Pratt & Whitney, each with a maximum thrust of 285 kN. The test was conducted to obtain three types of automatic landing certification for the new autopilot control law connected to the Pratt & Whitney engine. The A330, equipped with GE engines, has been tested under the same conditions for the same type 3 landing certification without any problems. And such certification tests have been successfully made about 1,000 times in the past 20 years and there has never been an accident, but the conditions are not as demanding as this one.
