The sum of the estimates of the general combining ability using the individual yield of the hybrid as well as the parents using each hybrid is used in theory and in practice to compare hybrid selection. It also tests the potential of an index with both sources of information. When the variance of the special combining ability of the parents exceeds twice the variance of the general combining ability, it should be selected based on the actual performance of the hybrids; otherwise, the selection based on the general combining ability. Unless there is a guarantor of poor estimates of the components of the genetic variance, an index may not be reliable. The actual meaning of the planned result of the selection process is briefly discussed. The results obtained are useful, in addition to genetics, to field applications of the two-column method.
