In 1987, people in England and Wales spent 17 billion pounds on alcohol, equivalent to 370 pounds per adult in the UK. The same year, the census office survey found that there are more men than women, especially young men, and that there are more middle-aged and older adults than adults. Different social classes have different levels of drinking. 5% of men and 8% of women do not drink alcohol. Men and women who are not alcoholic drinkers above 65 years of age rise to 10% and 15% respectively. Men’s drinking patterns have changed little over the past decade, but alcohol consumption has increased in most women’s age groups.
