As one of Forster’s most outstanding works, the trip to India has drawn great attention since it was published. Since the advent of Saïth’s Orientalism (1978) in the 1970s, scholars have interpreted this work from the perspective of others, racism, cultural identity and Orientalism. Few scholars noticed that Foster’s description of oriental culture “mystique” is actually equivalent to chaos. This article intends to trace the true appearance of the mysterious East in the “trip to India” from the perspective of “mystery” to reveal that Foster’s “mysterious” writing of oriental culture actually reflects his subconscious Western centralism.
