新中国成立初期,新疆现代美术的起点并不低。改革开放前,新疆就出现了一些在全国有影响的画家与作品。新时期以来,一批中青年美术家崛起,但由于他们成长于本土,还缺乏与内地发达地区美术家平起平坐的底气,于是具有一定的边缘化心理。年轻画家赵培智在第十一届全国美展上一举夺金,不但实现了新疆在全国美展上金奖零的突破,而且有着很强的示范意义,不仅大大增强了新一代新疆画家的自信心,而且对新疆美术未来的发展,也具有非常积极的促进作用。同时,对赵培智等新疆年轻画家获奖原因的深入剖析,也是研究新疆现代美术发展的一个重要课题。
