在1959年,当日本大学还没有建立理工学院物理系的时候,已故的安河内教授就已开始从事实验物理研究了。到1960年,作为日本全国私立大学的先驱,在日本大学成立了以研究氦液化器为主的低温科研小组。这个科研小组成立初期的研究课题以磁性和超导的基础研究和应用为主。大致可以分为:(1)磁性、超导材料;(2)新材料的研制;(3)电磁材料;(4)永磁电机等。到1978年,增加了制冷技术的研究课题。
