埃德加·斯诺是举世闻名的美国新闻记者,他写的《西行漫记》已是关于现代中国的重要文献,至今还为人们所称道。笔者在30年代末读过《西行漫记》之后,对作者敬佩和羡慕不止,亟求了解他采写《西行漫记》成功的原因。斯诺当年为什么会想到访问陕北?他为什么能实现访问陕北的打算?对于这些问题,我过去读到的材料都回答得不十分具体。这回我读了美国作者约翰·麦克斯威尔·汉密尔顿(John Maxwell Hamiton)所写《埃德加·斯诺传》的中译本,才得到了一些比较详细的回答。 《斯诺传》有了下列一些有关的记载:
Edgar Snow is the world-famous American journalist. His “Wandering Western Lines” is an important document on modern China and is still praised by people today. After reading “The Comic of the West Bank” in the late 1930s, the author admired and envied more than the author and urged him to understand the reasons for his success in writing and commencing the “Travel of the West”.
