Objective To explore the relationship between the three elements and the development of gestational diabetes mellitus by measuring the contents of three trace elements (Cr, Se, V) in serum. Methods Fifty pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and 47 normal pregnant women were enrolled in the International Peace Maternity and Child Care Hospital of China Welfare Society from January 2004 to January 2005. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) The serum levels of chromium, selenium and vanadium in two groups of pregnant women were analyzed, and their relationship with fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride and neonatal body weight were analyzed. Results The levels of serum chromium and selenium in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus were significantly lower than those in normal pregnant women (P <0.05). The levels of vanadium in serum of pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus were decreased. The serum chromium was negatively correlated with the body weight of cholesterol, triglyceride and neonates (P <0.05) Not related to fasting blood glucose. Selenium, vanadium and fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and neonatal weight are not related. Conclusion Pregnant women with gestational diabetes may have chromium and selenium deficiency.
