The active portion of the natural opiate-like peptide in the body is a tetrapeptide sequence: Tyr-Gly-Gly-Phe, which resembles morphine. The tetrapeptide sequence is present in human neuroendocrine tumor cells and can regulate tumor growth. Da-Vid Bostwick et al. (Chicago and Stanford University Medical Center, USA) used a new monoclonal antibody called 3-E7 to recognize this active moiety. All 15 adrenal tumors, 6 thyroid tumors, and 5 pituitary tumors all responded to opiate 3-E7 antibodies. This result was similar to that of most islet cell tumors and parathyroid tumors. Normal cells of the glandular tissue were also present. Reacts with 3-E7 antibody, so Bostwick et al. believe that normal cells and cancer cells produce the main opiate-like peptide.
